Joseph Smith provides an example for us as we seek answers to our questions. As a convert to the church, when I was told about the first vision I didn’t know of whether to believe it or not. But growing up, I have always though that there was something more than what I was being taught in the Catholic Church. I have always had a feeling that there must be something more relevant for us latter saints. I believe that Joseph Smith received the first vision when he was a young boy. I wouldn’t say the exact age because some account differs. I believe that it happened in the sacred grove, which is now known to be located in New York. After reading some accounts, I see that the Father and the Son did not appear to Joseph at once, but he saw the Father first and then the Son. By reading and researching these accounts I have come to believe that this event on Earth happened for our salvation. I believe it because miracles happen and I am better off; happier with this Gospel in my life.
The King Follett Sermon
This Sermon was given as a defense to anyone who disapproved him and his beliefs. This was such a powerful speech and it made me think more deeply about certain concepts. One of the things he says is for us to ask, "What kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thoughts into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with Him." Of course I feel when the spirit is with me, but it made me think about all the people who don't believe in Christ and makes me wonder what makes them to believe there isn't. There is that peaceful indescribable feeling such as promptings that help up choose the right. One of the most surprising things things was under the heading God an Exalted Man. Joseph states, "These ideas are incomprehensible to some, but they are simple. It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the character of God, and to know that we may converse with Him as one man converses with another, and that He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did; and I will show it from the Bible." This just blew my mind because it's true that there is so much information way past our capability to understand that we still have to learn. There were several things that stood out to me but one of them talks about the creation. "Hence we infer that God had materials to organize the world out of chaos—chaotic matter, which is element, and in which dwells all the glory. Element had an existence from the time He had. The pure principles of element are principles which can never be destroyed; they may be organized and re-organized, but not destroyed. They had no beginning and can have no end." When my husband and I discussed this it really made us ponder about God's character and on several things we didn't see eye to eye, but it is so wonderful to us because we are completely different people and we learn differently and we have our own way of interpreting difficult concepts and the whole experience brought so much joy.
